How do I leave SPALS?

To remove yourself from SPALS, send an email message with the text:

unsubscribe SPALS

to the mailing list manager at <majordomo@lists.cirr.com>. Leave the subject of your message blank. Do not include any other text in the body of the message, and do not use formatted text. Do not use the <>'s listed in the Majordomo address. Do not send this message to the SPALS address. Your request should be processed within 24 hours.

Please be sure to send your unsubscribe message with unformatted text. Using formatted text may cause the Majordomo software to ignore your request.

Also be sure that you send the message to unsubscribe from the exact mailbox that is subscribed to SPALS. If you send from a different address, our Majordomo listserver will bounce your request to a list administrator for confirmation of your request.

Why did I get an error message when I tried to leave SPALS?

If you received an error message when trying to leave SPALS, or if your request to Majordomo appeared to be ignored, the most common causes are:

  • Including other text in the body of the message. Sending a message with formatted text (fonts, colours, sizes) or a signature with enclosures (pictures, business card, sound, etc.) includes other text in the body of your message, and can cause Majordomo to ignore, misdirect or reject your request. The formatting codes needed for such messages are present in the body of the message, even though they may not be displayed by your mail reader. Turn off formatting for the message that you send to our Majordomo.
  • Sending your request from a different mailbox than the one that is subscribed to SPALS. Your provider may have changed the way it identifies your mailbox, which can cause this problem. Or, you may be using a mailbox other than the one that is subscribed to SPALS. Make sure you are using the mailbox that is subscribed to SPALS. Your exact subscribed mailbox name is included in the Bio List.

Another possible cause is sending the message to the incorrect address. The correct address for our Majordomo is <majordomo@lists.cirr.com>.

How can I leave SPALS temporarily (on vacation, moving, etc.)?

To leave SPALS temporarily, you must unsubscribe and resubscribe when you return.

When you leave SPALS, send a brief message to Michael to alert us that you are leaving temporarily. (Depending on your level of activity on the list, you may wish to leave a brief note there, as well.) Make sure you keep a copy of your most recent bio.

When you return, resend the copy of your bio to Michael, along with a brief message that you are returning from your temporary absence.
