CODE OF CONDUCT

Code of Conduct:

SPALS members value the supportive and understanding environment created on the list. The SPALS code of conduct helps us to preserve our self-help group process. Our group process is what SPALS members depend upon for support. Our group process depends upon mutual support, decorum, tolerance, and self-respect. Our code of conduct:

  • Ask for help and share your concerns
  • Respect the group process -- share our bandwidth
  • Provide thoughtful support
  • Avoid providing advice, even when asked
  • Accept that other members may make choices that you would not
  • Avoid criticizing another member in any way
  • Respect the feelings of others -- even if you are hurt
  • Recognize our diversity
  • Help others to face the present and the future
  • Respect each member's privacy

Those who do not respect our group process can interfere with the ability of other members to obtain support. Intolerant personal remarks, defiance of the group process and flaming posts are inconsistent with our code of conduct and will not be welcome on SPALS.

Member Obligation:

It is each member's obligation to abide by our code of conduct, observe the SPALS Charter, and follow the SPALS Guidelines, all of which guide our members in providing mutual support.

The SPALS Charter identifies the intended areas of discussion for SPALS. The SPALS Guidelines, by specific examples, attempt to identify clearly those few topics and behaviors that generally are found to be hurtful on SPALS. Any questions about SPALS group process or appropriate conduct on SPALS should be directed privately to the list administrators.
